Serendipity

Writer's picture: Diya Hebbar Diya Hebbar

Hello everyone!

A few days ago I was given the golden opportunity to visit Singapore International School and take part in a poetry writing competition in which to my surprise and delight, I stood second place. Our task was to describe a picture. The picture was of a bus window(like the local ones in India) with rails and outside the window was a view of a few street shops and carts. This poem was my perception on the image.

As she looked out the windows,

Of the rattled old bus,  she felt caged,

Yet yearned to be free.

Like a mockingbird in a cage, she longed to soar

yet feared her destiny.

What would it be like, to be in control?

Work hard for daily bread and butter

To depend solely, upon oneself?

Everyday discovering something new

That you never knew was part of you

Like the several adventurers on her bookshelf.

What she seldom failed to see,

Was the misfortune and the struggle,

She had the gift of vision, yet she was blind.

To how not all of humankind

Could afford to fantasize,

Life is beautiful, life is a puzzle.

Right across the street

Sat a wise old man

Selling fresh produce for a livelihood

He thought not of what could be

Rather, gracefully thanked eternity

For he knew his mere existence, was serendipity.
