A Love Like Ours

Dear readers,

Happy Pride Month! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ 🌈

On the occasion of Pride Month, I decided to rekindle my passion for writing by writing about a cause I am very passionate about, the rights of the LGBTQIA++ community.

For those of you who have a rudimentary understanding of everything this community entails and would like to know more, please do peruse the following article by The New York Times that touches upon some of the basic jargon in regards to the community:

I hope this poem inspires my readers to open their minds and hearts to this multidimensional, diverse community.

A love like ours

There are 7 colours in a rainbow

There are 7 wonders of the ancient world

Over 7 billion hearts

That yearn to be loved and heard.

But despite living in a world of diversity

We live amidst great hate and fear

The irony lies in being hated because of a love

That transcends gender and external veneer

A glimmer in her eyes,

A dazzling rainbow in her heart

She is vibrant and vivacious

She sets herself apart

She confines herself not,

To what society says she must be

She is non-binary she is non-conforming

Her spirit is set free

He is shy, he is solemn,

He is different from the rest.

To be accepted by the world,

He runs away from who he is,

The visage of a woman

shields the heart of a man

Until he accepts who he is

No one ever can.

We live in a society that defines,

That concocts cruel names,

Names that categorize, define and confine you,

That are used to spread fear and hate

But let no one ever tell you

Who it is you must be

Be loud, be bold, be proud,

Set the true you free

Love is a spectrum of colour,

It is neither black nor white.

Love is deaf.

Love is blind.

Love is cruel.

Love is kind.

But love is love

And who we love, we get to decide.
