Monochrome

As human beings, we are constantly in the position where we must navigate through a myriad of emotions- happiness, sadness, anger, pain, frustration and excitement- the list is endless. Over the past couple of months, I found myself in the position where I experienced each of these complex and conflicting feelings concurrently. At times, I felt euphoric and inexplicably happy while some days I would feel dejected and exhausted. The constant inflow of passionate feelings took me by storm, ironically making me feel numb and emotionless. However, I have now come to understand that our emotions- the complex array of feelings that rule us- imbibe a sense of colour and meaning into our lives. Without them, we are devoid of diversity and colour, we are, in effect, monochrome.

Monochrome

The world often appears

In shades of black and white

A monochromatic existence

A great chasm devoid of light

For sadness is much like a shadow

That engulfs each sphere of life

With its manacles around our wrists

We crave the slightest respite

But rays of light soon trickle in

As we find hope in the darkest of times

The clouds no longer overshadow the sun

As it casts its dazzling light

Such is the nature of happiness,

Making us forget all our woes

But like a whisper in the autumn breeze,

It fades away before we know

Black and white mingle with shades of red

As rage seeps into our bones

We resent the ephemeral happiness

That unveiled a sensation we had never known

But rage translates itself into passion,

Sparking a flame of determination and hope

As we choose the path of happiness

We add splashes of orange and yellow

And as the seasons change, and time slips by

We wearily traipse the path

While others seem to have found themselves

We remain lost in the dark

But hidden in the crevices

Of a place, we knew not to exist

Lay a green jealousy towards others’ success

Envy that continues to persist

So we surmount yet another hurdle,

A leap towards our chosen life

Letting our choices determine who we are

Overcoming the demons that lurk inside

And upon seeing ourselves for who we are

The mist shrouding the river clears

Across blue waters lay happiness

That realized itself when we no longer feared

Before we seemed to notice,

Vibrancy seeped into our lives

Our emotions added colours,

Vivid, unbridled and bright

Life is no longer monochrome,

It is a spectrum of colour and light

As we embrace a multitude of emotions

We navigate the secrets of life

Loved the poem.loved the way you attached each emotion ( positive and negative) to a colour making it seem so beautiful. Why is a particular emotion attached to a particular colour?Something to think about 🤔🤔🤔🤔
